Getting Started with Microservices using Spring Boot

  • Java
  • Spring Boot
  • Microservices

When Do You Need Microservices?

Not every project needs microservices. Team size, independent deployment needs and scalability requirements drive this decision.

Core Components

  1. Service Discovery — Eureka or Consul
  2. API Gateway — Spring Cloud Gateway
  3. Config Server — centralized configuration
  4. Resilience — circuit breaker with Resilience4j

A Simple Controller

@RestController
@RequestMapping("/api/orders")
public class OrderController {

    private final OrderService service;

    public OrderController(OrderService service) {
        this.service = service;
    }

    @GetMapping("/{id}")
    public OrderResponse get(@PathVariable UUID id) {
        return service.findById(id);
    }
}

Tips

  • Keep inter-service communication asynchronous (Kafka/RabbitMQ) when possible.
  • Give each service its own database.
  • Add distributed tracing for observability.
